Srinagar, Jun 17 (KNO): A heartwarming display of communal harmony and brotherhood marked the first day of Muharram outside the historic Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta area of Srinagar, where volunteers from different sections of society came together to serve the public in remembrance of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and the martyrs of Karbala. The volunteers distributed drinking water and juices among passersby and devotees, reflecting the timeless message of sacrifice, compassion and service associated with the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA). The office bearers of Anjuman Auqaf Jama Masjid also joined the initiative, lending support to the humanitarian effort and underscoring the spirit of unity that Muharram inspires across communities. Speaking with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), volunteers said the sacrifice of Imam Hussain (RA) continues to serve as a beacon of faith, justice, patience and humanity. “The message of Karbala transcends sectarian boundaries and teaches us to stand for truth, justice and compassion. Through this small gesture, we seek to honour the values upheld by Imam Hussain (RA),” Mubashir, a volunteer, said. Another participant said the initiative reflected the centuries-old tradition of communal harmony in Kashmir. “Muharram is not only a period of remembrance but also an opportunity to strengthen bonds of brotherhood and mutual respect among people,” he said. The atmosphere around the historic mosque was marked by reverence and solidarity, with members of both Shia and Sunni communities participating in the service activity and exchanging greetings of peace and goodwill. A passerby said the initiative offered a powerful example of social cohesion and collective responsibility, reinforcing the values of unity and compassion that form the essence of the teachings of Karbala—(KNO)
